Blue Pottery on Ocotillo

Blue Pots on Ocotillo

Blue Pottery on Ocotillo © 2012 Bo Mackison

I lose my center. I feel depressed, scattered, in pieces. I must have time alone in which to mull over any encounter, and to extract its juices, its essence, to understand what has really happened to me as a consequence of it.    ~ May Sarton

I had copied this quote in my journal, and until I got to the ending and noted May Sarton’s attribution, I thought I had written those words. Maybe I wouldn’t have written such perfectly paced phrasing, but the sentiment was right on.

Am I trying to keep all the little pots filled? Am I being careful to not be harmed by the thorns on the ocotillo branches as I draw nearer? I do think things over, slowly, simmer them for awhile. Sometimes I repeat the same experiences in order to capture the essence.

May Sarton and me, hmmm?

About Bo Mackison

I'm a photographer, book-artist, traveler, naturalist, and creator of the Contemplative Creatives Journey, An Online Workshop and Community and Desert Wisdom Cards and Workshops. Though often not well known, I find the desert a welcoming place - a healing space. Its mysteries and gifts transformed me several years ago. Since that first encounter, I return again and again to fill my well in what most people think of as a desolate region. I'd love to share my desert discoveries and wisdom with you. Please subscribe to receive my five part mini email course The Gifts of the Desert. It's my gift to you.

  1. I think May’s quote says in a nutshell the experience many of us go through quite often. I love that you save quotes and share them with us. Makes me ponder over my morning coffee. You have a hidden ocotillo fence? Adore the blue pots.

  2. Joanna Paterson says

I love that picture. The colours of your landscape just now appeal to me so much.

I often get disconnected and scattered too. Only cure I know is to spend time outside, close to the earth in its most natural form. I guess there’s mulling going on – but generally just letting essence rise up through my feet 🙂

  3. Lovely blue pots. It’s tough trying to fill them all at once, isn’t it?

  4. The photo goes perfectly with the quote and your comments. Well done.
Years ago I read all or most of May Sarton’s diaries. They spoke to me. She must have been an introvert, like me–we need lots of alone time. Like Joanna, I’m finding that daily time outdoors is helping me make it through the winter without getting depressed.

Maybe we introverts all sound alike, Anita. I think I rank 100% on the introvert scale. But the outdoors surely does get us out and about, and it helps me get out of my introvert shell.

  5. Fascinating photo.

  6. What a visual treat!! Love being on this adventure with you!

Well, Marcie. If you’re still missing snow, you can come on over. We may have desert in the lower levels, but we’ve got snow high up in the mountains! I think it was about 25˚ in the Grand Canyon this week. They have snow… 🙂
