Canary Springs at Yellowstone National Park

Yellowstone National Park Hot Spring Terraces in Mammoth

Mammoth Terraces © 2010 Bo Mackison

The terraces in the Mammoth area of Yellowstone National Park descend like huge stair steps. Even the site of the Mammoth Hot Springs Hotel and the other town buildings are sitting on the top of a travertine terrace, one that is several thousand years old.

Located on the Main Terrace is Canary Springs, a part of which you see in the photograph. The brownish areas of the springs have microorganisms growing in the hot water and that causes the colors, often yellow, green, or reddish brown.

I'm a photographer, book-artist, traveler, naturalist, and creator of the Contemplative Creatives Journey, An Online Workshop and Community and Desert Wisdom Cards and Workshops. Though often not well known, I find the desert a welcoming place - a healing space. Its mysteries and gifts transformed me several years ago. Since that first encounter, I return again and again to fill my well in what most people think of as a desolate region. I'd love to share my desert discoveries and wisdom with you. It is one of those places that you can’t stop looking at. I think it’s the second largest terraces like this in the world. And only a few exist at all.

  2. Otherworldly. Quite amazing.
