Desert Blessing

Desert Hymns ©2016 Bo Mackison

cactus wrens hide their nests in spiky cholla
blessed be the cactus wrens preparing for new life

thrashers sing copycat trills from the highest branches
blessed be the thrashers chipping their stolen hymns

cottonwoods sprout miniature leaves, tiny bits of foliage
blessed be the cottonwoods that ribbon the desert green

the grasses greening the mesquite dotted foothills
blessed be the winter rains that soaked life into the seedlings

crested blackbirds swarm the palo verde
blessed be the desert mistletoe whose berries feed the birds

wrens and cholla
thrashers and cottonwoods
blackbirds and berries

bounty in the desert
blessings in the desert

bounty and blessings

i prepare for life uncertain
singing stolen hymns to lift my spirits
a ribbon of hope threads through the dry and harsh lands
spring rains, i ask
quench my thirst, quench my thirst

warmth to hold me
rains to bless me
sunlight to nourish me

desert blessing
desert healing

About Bo Mackison

I'm a photographer, book-artist, traveler, naturalist, and creator of the Contemplative Creatives Journey, An Online Workshop and Community and Desert Wisdom Cards and Workshops. Though often not well known, I find the desert a welcoming place - a healing space. Its mysteries and gifts transformed me several years ago. Since that first encounter, I return again and again to fill my well in what most people think of as a desolate region. I'd love to share my desert discoveries and wisdom with you. Please subscribe to receive my five part mini email course The Gifts of the Desert. It's my gift to you.
