Desert Botanicals at Tempe Festival of the Arts

Agave Abstract

Agave Abstract © 2011 Bo Mackison

This abstract photograph of several agave leaves focuses more on the pattern of the plant and the colors. Since it was photographed using a shallow depth of field (not all of the plant was in focus when I composed the photo) the tiny spines transformed into luminescent circles. If you look closely, only a part of three different leaves are in focus. The rest is left to your imagination to fill in what YOU see.

This will be one of the new photographs in a series of desert botanicals that I will be introducing at this weekend’s Art Festival in Tempe, Arizona. In addition to the botanicals, there will also be two other new series — an Arizona National Park series and an Arizona Mission series. I’ll post a few photographs from these in the next posts.

Seeded Earth Photography and I will be exhibiting at the Tempe Festival of the Arts held in downtown Tempe, the Mill Avenue district. The show begins tomorrow, Friday March 25 and runs though Sunday March 27. The festival is open from 10 a.m. to dusk each day.

I’ll be on Mill Avenue in a corner booth, Booth #1422, Easy to find — I’m located near the Jack in the Box. If you’re in the Phoenix area, stop in and say hello.

About Bo Mackison

I'm a photographer, book-artist, traveler, naturalist, and creator of the Contemplative Creatives Journey, An Online Workshop and Community and Desert Wisdom Cards and Workshops. Though often not well known, I find the desert a welcoming place - a healing space. Its mysteries and gifts transformed me several years ago. Since that first encounter, I return again and again to fill my well in what most people think of as a desolate region. I'd love to share my desert discoveries and wisdom with you. Please subscribe to receive my five part mini email course The Gifts of the Desert. It's my gift to you.

This photo has a rather gentle feel to it, Bo; gentle not being a word I would normally assosiate with a cactus plant! I can see the three leaves in focus (after you pointed out the fact). The other leaves really have taken on a very pretty look, with the spikes turning into gentle little bubbles. Very clever of you!

Have a fantastic time at the show. I wish I were just a tad closer, I’d be there for sure! 🙂

Yes, it isn;t the typical “see my spines” desert plant. And I rather fell in love with those gentle little bubbles–bokeh–too! Thanks.
And wouldn’t it be awesome to meet you at an art fair! I;d be proud to show you my art booth.

  2. I hope you have a very successful show and a great time in Tempe!

  3. Hope you have a wonderful time at the show. I agree with Joanne–this photo has a soft feel for a cactus! Lovely colors, too. Spring in the desert–a delicate time.

I love this soft cactus, too, Quinn. And I did something I typically do not do with my photos. All those soft greens and yellows were begging for some heightened purple, so I intensified the purple. I like the bit of contrast it gives the delicate colors.

  4. Magical abstract! Love how you’ve filled the frame. Enjoy the show!

It’s a whole new ballgame, shooting desert plants instead of bright florals. Makes me look carefully, work with patterns, muted colors, composition–lovin’ that! And I am learning so much!

  5. Very enjoyable seeing you create such an artistic interpretation of the cactus. I LOVE IT!!!
