Coffee is real good when you drink it it gives you time to think. It’s a lot more than just a drink; it’s something happening. Not as in hip, but like an event, a place to be, but not like a location, but like somewhere within yourself. It gives you time, but not actual hours or minutes, but a chance to be, like be yourself, and have a second cup. ~ Gertrude Stein

A pitcher of water, a container of ground coffee, a backpacker’s stove with a little fuel canister and a French press coffee cup. That’s a lot of equipment but I find it all to be incredibly important. With the above contraptions and about five minutes of my time, a simply perfect cup of coffee can be had.

I think it a necessary morning ritual after one sleeps in a car wrapped in a sleeping bag with only nose and mouth exposed to air (while ignoring any claustrophobic tendencies.) One should be able to take that first hike at dawn with a full cup of hot coffee for companionship!

About Bo Mackison

I'm a photographer, book-artist, traveler, naturalist, and creator of the Contemplative Creatives Journey, An Online Workshop and Community and Desert Wisdom Cards and Workshops. Though often not well known, I find the desert a welcoming place - a healing space. Its mysteries and gifts transformed me several years ago. Since that first encounter, I return again and again to fill my well in what most people think of as a desolate region. I'd love to share my desert discoveries and wisdom with you. Please subscribe to receive my five part mini email course The Gifts of the Desert. It's my gift to you.

What a great image you portray, Bo! I can almost smell your coffee….ahhhh! 🙂

  2. That reminds me… I haven’t had any yet today so I’m off now to make some 🙂 Great image.

  3. You should open a cafe, perhaps MackisonBucks :). You have inspired me. I’m going to get a cup of Java.

  4. The black and white gives it not only an early-morning vibe, but also a still-life feel. Is that the hissing of the stove I hear?

  5. Sipping mine as I read about yours. You’ve convinced me car camping in the desert is a Zen experience I should definitely have. Coyotes and all. If for nothing but to see the stars and share morning coffee with the sunrise. Bliss, honey.

  6. I’ve never thought about it quite like that, but I do believe car camping in the desert is quite Zen-like…

  7. Perfect!!
