Flower Patch and Birch

Squill in a Patch, Olbrich Botanical Gardens in Madison, Wisconsin

Squills in a Patch © 2011 Bo Mackison

Lately I’ve spent a lot of my photo time looking up at the flowering trees. The magnolias have been magnificent, the crab apple blossoms are just beginning to open. I’ve also spent some of my time looking towards the earth, too. And I found this rather charming patch of squills under a birch tree. I tried several variations — the close-ups showed the simplicity of the flower, but didn’t capture its delicacy. I sprawled on the ground for a few angles, but it wasn’t until I photographed the patch of dainty flowers with the birch tree as background, that I felt I captured the feel of these diminutive plants, a patch of color in contrast to the earth. It’s rather a friendly flower!

I photographed these flowers at Olbrich Botanical Gardens in Madison, Wisconsin.

  1. Beautiful image Bo, it’s good to look down sometimes isn’t it 😉

  2. I really like them with the Birch. That makes a very good image! We have just several in our yard: they must have been planted but if so it would have been over 50 years ago. Still beautiful though.

  3. Such sweet delicacies!!! Love how you’ve complimented and framed them with the birch!

  4. I agree with bringing the birch into the picture (so to speak). It makes the image and feeling.

  5. Oh, my goodness. Check out my blog when you have time. This is simply gorgeous and I just WISH I could have a birch tree down here in the hot, sticky southland.

    Love the perspective.

Oh Bo, I had images in my head of you sprawling on the ground to take the photos, in the Botanical gardens. Now, that’s dedication for you…and so worth it with such a beautiful result! 🙂

By the way, I still have your “Crabapple Blossoms” photo as my screen saver, from the Calm Space last year. It’s so beautiful and I have never tired of seeing it.
