Last Summer Rose in Allen Centennial Garden

Last Summer Rose © 2010 Bo Mackison

I’ve been making almost daily trips to the gardens this summer.

Over the past five months, there have always been roses to greet me when I entered the Allen Centennial Gardens. They bloomed early this year, the first rose buds opening in the early days of May. And now, as we approach the last days of September, most of the roses have bloomed.

All, except for this one last pink rose, sheltered near the garden trellis. It was just beginning to open when I was there a few days ago. I do believe it will be my last rose of this summer.

Though often not well known, I find the desert a welcoming place - a healing space. Its mysteries and gifts transformed me several years ago. Since that first encounter, I return again and again to fill my well in what most people think of as a desolate region. I'd love to share my desert discoveries and wisdom with you. 1. That’s a beautiful rose! But the last one? Say it ain’t so, Bo!

  2. Your abstracts are always so beautiful. Focus is always on the perfect spot. Love it.

  3. Lovely angle you chose. Good for you for making frequent trips to the garden. This is one year in which I didn’t do that.

  4. Beautiful, soft, pink rose and nicely done perspective. 🙂

  5. The Last Rose of The Summer. My maternal great-grandfathered always played that tune for us on his Ocarina when my cousins and I would visit at his house. We were all aroun 4 – 6 years old. He was Swedish. He moved with his family from Norway (his dad had a job in Oslo) shortly after the US Civil War. He was a life long musician and engineer. His flute was amazing – carved out of ivory and ebony. I was told by my grandmother that the finger holes on the flute were once square, but he worn them round by the amount of playing time.

    Thanks for the memory. 🙂

  6. I love the soft pinkness of it. Beautiful. 🙂

  7. I’ve noticed that there are still a few late bloomers out there. This is stunning. So soft and beautiful!!!

  8. Oh, so lovely. You have captured this perfectly! Frame this one!
