Mist Shrouded Oak Savanna

Row of Oaks in Owen Conservation Park in Madison, Wisconsin

Mist Shrouded Oak Savanna

Moody. A contemplative space.

Black oaks, their looming figures stark against the swirling fog. Prairie grasses, nipped by frost, browned, brittle, curl at the feet of the giant trees.

An oak savanna.

“A savanna is generally defined as a plant community where trees are a component but where their density is ‘…so low that it allows grasses and other herbaceous vegetation to become the actual dominants of the community.'” (Curtis, The Vegetation of Wisconsin).

Photographed at Owen Conservation Park in Madison, Wisconsin.

About Bo Mackison

I'm a photographer, book-artist, traveler, naturalist, and creator of the Contemplative Creatives Journey, An Online Workshop and Community and Desert Wisdom Cards and Workshops. Though often not well known, I find the desert a welcoming place - a healing space. Its mysteries and gifts transformed me several years ago. Since that first encounter, I return again and again to fill my well in what most people think of as a desolate region. I'd love to share my desert discoveries and wisdom with you. 1. Lovely black oaks in the mist.

It’s a lovely area — oak savannas aren’t that common any longer in Wisconsin. It’s either forested or now the big thing is prairie restoration. Savannas fall in the middle.

  3. The silhouettes against the mist are soft and comfortable. Beautiful photo!

I like that you see the photo as soft and comfortable. It looks a bit spooky to me, but it’s great that art means different things to different people.

  4. What a picture. I love it!

Thank you, Vanessa. I need to get back in the practice of jumping out of bed before dawn. With our time change I’m missing out on the early morning shots.

  5. Those trees almost beckon you into the fog. Love the gentle tones.

  6. Love the autumn colors in this..the warm misty feel!

    • Bo Mackison says

I’m laughing because it was a cold misty morning. The first time this season my fingers were numb after an early morning shoot. But the colors do make it seem warmer, don;t they?

  7. BTW, I have been trying to post a comment on the oak Savannah photo but my computer … or some computer gremlin … simply will not let me. SO, please know just how much I LOVE LOVE LOVE that photo. The stark, stately trunks, reaching branches, misty background, luscious grasses…I Just Love It. Take THAT computer gremlins…sorry I had to put this comment on your Gingko post!

    • Bo Mackison says

OK, Debi, I put this wayward comment on the proper post. Thanks SO MUCH for your compliments. And take that, you computer gremlins, whomever you may be…

  8. I love the mood in this photo. It just captures old feelings that I can’t place. The memories are positive, but I can’t place them right now.

  9. I’ve had this picture on my browser for a time. As I come back to it there is always a sudden intake of breath. The mood – fabulous. The tree shapes – incredible. Thank you Bo, for showing us the part of the earth, the part of life, which reminds us how incredible life, through nature, truly is.
    Angel blessings.

  10. I am drawn to the sensitivity and quietness of all your lovely work…

  11. Ah, that image is so reminiscent of a spooky forest in a movie to me. Gave me many ideas. Lol.
