Opening in the Sun

Purple Cornflower Beginning Its Bloom

Purple Cornflower Beginning © 2008 Bo Mackison

A pale purple coneflower just beginning to open.

This plant is common in Wisconsin and found in dry prairies and open savannas from Nebraska and Iowa east to Arkansas and Indiana. Farther east, it is seen occasionally usually an escape from cultivation. Illegal digging represents a major threat to this plant in some regions.

About Bo Mackison

I'm a photographer, book-artist, traveler, naturalist, and creator of the Contemplative Creatives Journey, An Online Workshop and Community and Desert Wisdom Cards and Workshops. Though often not well known, I find the desert a welcoming place - a healing space. Its mysteries and gifts transformed me several years ago. Since that first encounter, I return again and again to fill my well in what most people think of as a desolate region. I'd love to share my desert discoveries and wisdom with you. You’ve captured this well. I like how you got the tip and under colors of the middle part of the flower.

  6. This is an unusual shot of a cone flower. Most of the time you see the fully mature bloom. It’s very interesting to see the nascent bloom. Beautiful detail.

  7. Very pretty. You have a wonderful talent for capturing flowers. You make them look so magical. 🙂

  8. Beautiful Bo !!
