Reflections on Colors and Shapes

Reflections in Two Windows

Reflections in Two Window - Spring © 2012

I found I could say things with colors and shapes that I couldn’t say any other way — things I had no words for. ~ Georgia O’Keeffe

Two windows — one with a gauzy white curtain, and the other, small, squared off, sealed off with rough laid blocks. Yet the casement is painted in happy colors, bright pink, deep blue. Hand-painted curlicues, curly Cs with a freshness,  a surety, a promise of decorations and celebrations.  Even life is represented in the greens of the aloe and the tree branches, dense with life sustaining yellow buds.

An open window, a closed window, bright colors, artistic flair, living things, the burst of spring. Life is full.

About Bo Mackison

I'm a photographer, book-artist, traveler, naturalist, and creator of the Contemplative Creatives Journey, An Online Workshop and Community and Desert Wisdom Cards and Workshops. Though often not well known, I find the desert a welcoming place - a healing space. Its mysteries and gifts transformed me several years ago. Since that first encounter, I return again and again to fill my well in what most people think of as a desolate region. I'd love to share my desert discoveries and wisdom with you. Please subscribe to receive my five part mini email course The Gifts of the Desert. It's my gift to you.

  1. Wonderful colors on this house. I could live in a house painted like that!

So many of the houses in the Southwest are in the bright colors — and they fit into the landscape so beautifully.

  2. I like the way you have composed this image; encouraging us to savor the colors and shapes without ‘cluttering’ our eye with surrounding ‘stuff.’ Very nice.

The colors really catch my eye, Sue. I’ve been doing a series — just for me, so far — of just colors. Bright blue on bricks, melon on textured adobe. So beautiful in their simplicity.

  3. Beautiful, and sending best wishes from the shores of Lake Michigan in Wisconsin. Ellen

Not too many of these bright colors on the Wisconsin lakeshore — unless one of those gorgeous dawns lights up Lake Michigan and the sky. Best to you, too, Ellen.

  4. The colors are luscious, Bo. There’s just something about the great SW that terra cotta and turquoise – oranges and blues – supremely define. Love, love, love. Maybe you know, but I’m thinking it’s mimicking sky and desert, those colors, with the different shades and tones. That’s my thinking. Great Georgia O’Keeffe quote.

  5. I love the colors and light in this image, as well as the details and composition. Lovely. 🙂

How beautiful! I love the colors, and the shapes balanced with the tree – very nice. Thanks for joining in with Exploring with a Camera!

  7. I like the building but what really adds to it is the tree silhouette and the plant at the bottom.

  8. I absolutely love this picture. The bright contrasting colours really attract me. I love the way you’ve included the green of the cactus below and a strip of blue sky at the top. The tree leaning and covering the whole frame adds beautiful movement and softens the straight lines and the sheer presence of it pulls my eye into all of the other details: the dainty decoration around the bigger window frame, the way the curtains are draped and the reflection of the branches. I also noted the bricks behind the small window. I love the way the tiny leaves and buds are just starting to open on the tree.
    A really lovely composition!

Sandra, thank you. I loved reading what you saw in this photo. It was rather my experience when I was looking through my lens. So simple, and so detailed!
