Tall Grass Prairie

Tall Grass Prairie

This isn’t the time of the year to be walking through a tall grass prairie. It is as dense as a thicket in a forest. Many of the prairie flowers bloom in July and August, some are already setting to seed. The Compass Plant, Indian Plantain, False Indigo, Orange Milkweed, Black Eyed Susans and Purple Coneflowers are some of the plants that will grow tall enough to make a hike through this area difficult. There are also four main grasses which grow in thick clumps — Little Bluestem, Big Bluestem, Indiangrass, and Switchgrass. It is not unusual to have many plants swaying three to six feet above your head.

This photograph was taken at Pope Farms Park, a natural area west of Madison, and this prairie is a restoration that was seeded about 5 years ago.

About Bo Mackison

I'm a photographer, book-artist, traveler, naturalist, and creator of the Contemplative Creatives Journey, An Online Workshop and Community and Desert Wisdom Cards and Workshops. Though often not well known, I find the desert a welcoming place - a healing space. Its mysteries and gifts transformed me several years ago. Since that first encounter, I return again and again to fill my well in what most people think of as a desolate region. I'd love to share my desert discoveries and wisdom with you. Please subscribe to receive my five part mini email course The Gifts of the Desert. It's my gift to you.

Comments

  1. I love the composition, just right

  2. Love the colors, Bo. You’ve captured the late summer shades of browns and greens, yellows and whites gently faded by the sun. Summer is fading, autumn is coming. The sumac in Nashville is already turning bright orange and the light is beginning to change. Love it.

  3. Really beautiful, Bo.

  4. Such a typical…beautiful meadow scene. Love the soft light.
