Giving Thanks to the Trees

Many people, other than the authors, contribute to the making of a book, from the first person who had the bright idea of alphabetic writing through the invention of the movable type to the lumberjack who felled the trees that were pulped for printing. It is not customary to acknowledge the trees themselves, though their commitment is total.

When I examine my bookshelves for the perfect book to read, I am always thankful for my books. I’ve never thought to be thankful for the trees, too.

I'm a photographer, book-artist, traveler, naturalist, and creator of the Contemplative Creatives Journey, An Online Workshop and Community and Desert Wisdom Cards and Workshops. Though often not well known, I find the desert a welcoming place - a healing space. Its mysteries and gifts transformed me several years ago. Since that first encounter, I return again and again to fill my well in what most people think of as a desolate region. I'd love to share my desert discoveries and wisdom with you. Please subscribe to receive my five part mini email course The Gifts of the Desert. It's my gift to you.

Thanks for the reminder – I’m guilty of not thinking about trees while reading my favorite books. I DO, however, feel like I’ve lost a good friend every time a tree is cut down. It’s especially painful when trees are cut down thoughtlessly and to simply be able to pour more concrete! UGH!

Bo, that is a beautiful thought. I wonder if the gift that the trees have given is part of the reason we love books so much?

  3. I never thought of it that way, and probably should have since it seems so obvious now.

Thank you for the reminder. Every time I pick up a book I’ll thank the trees.

  4. Nice composition. The detail is really interesting here.

  5. Beautiful shot Bo. I like the movement created by the grain of the wood.

  6. Fantastic detail. And – yes – we should be thankful for everything in our lives. Trees have stories too!

  7. I love the textures in this picture! Nice work!

  8. Great photo! I am sorry to say beside making books, the newspapers are using tons and tons of new prints too. That’s why the trees are heavily cutting down and causing concern by the NGOs.

  9. Thought provoking quote. The Giving Tree(s) are out there (but perhaps not quite as voluntary as Shel Silverstein might cause us to believe). The grain and texture in your photo is eye catching. I’m drawn both to the middle and endless loops around it.

By the way – no electrons were harmed by this message. 🙂

  10. You’ve taken very great shots. Keep it up.
    Regards
