Vines on the Barn Window

Five minutes from our home on the outskirts of Madison, we are in the heart of Wisconsin farm country. Most nearby farms have been in families for many years. Many of them are century farms – the farms have been in production by the same family for 100 years or longer.

Over 99% of Wisconsin farms are family-owned and there are over 76,500 farms in the state. Wisconsin’s farmers grow enough food to feed 11.8 million people a year. While Wisconsin is strongly associated with dairies – we ARE the Dairy State and we call ourselves cheeseheads – we farm many unusual things, too.

We are among the national leaders in the production of cranberries and ginseng, have large numbers of trout and mink farms, and, of course, the state is dotted with Christmas Tree Farms.

I'm a photographer, book-artist, traveler, naturalist, and creator of the Contemplative Creatives Journey, An Online Workshop and Community and Desert Wisdom Cards and Workshops. Though often not well known, I find the desert a welcoming place - a healing space. Its mysteries and gifts transformed me several years ago. Since that first encounter, I return again and again to fill my well in what most people think of as a desolate region. I'd love to share my desert discoveries and wisdom with you. 1. Beautiful capture and great perspective. I love the rusty roof with the window jutting out. The dried vines creeping up on the chipped red paint of the barn and onto the window is a wonderful contrast. I would love to see another version of this photo in the summer. What would the vines look like?

I’ve been really enjoying your photos, Barbara. Very artistic.

  2. Anna~ that’s a great idea, re-visiting in summer. I’m hoping the vines would be green – ah, the color we are all awaiting. Thanks for the nice comments.

  3. Hey, I’d like to see the barn in snow – perhaps 3′ to 4′ of snow :).

I do love the colors and the texture of the barn (and the colors would contrast nicely with a white snow I might add).

A summer and fall contrast would be interesting not only for this subject, but also for some your other items. The vines could look especially interesting if they’re alive.

  4. Great texture in this photo, Barbara. I love the colors on the roof – they are fabulous!

  5. This is stunning! I didn’t know Wisconsin was a big producer of Ginseng! Very cool and the Christmas Tree Farms is great habitat for some nesting birds!

  6. …all that said and I love your accent too! 🙂

As for the photograph; I really love this one! I think you really have an eye for color and project it in a really beautiful way. I agree; stunning!

  7. lovely shot. the texture on the roof and the colors are amazing, very well composed as well

  8. Beautiful!
    I love places like that!

  9. Rusting tin. Wonderful texture and color diversity all in one shot. The vine covered wood is yummy too. Thanks
