Wild Columbine

Wild Columbine

Wild Columbine

Skirting the rocks at the forest edge
With a running flame from ledge to ledge,
Or swaying deeper in shadowy glooms,
A smoldering fire in her dusky blooms;
Bronzed and molded by wind and sun,
Maddening, gladdening every one
With a gypsy beauty full and fine —
Health to the crimson columbine!

~ Elaine Goodale Eastman (1863 – 1953)

Still working on a set of photographs I took in our back yard gardens. The Columbine is one of the easiest plants to grow, and I think one of the most beautiful. Like a fairy’s cap or a tiny lit lantern or maybe even an aerialist mid-air.

  5. The poem and image are wonderful.

    As you know, I fell in love with the columbine this year. Interesting to hear it’s easy to grow as I could not get mine to grow at all. I started with seeds. I may try plants next year.

  6. Columbine is a biennial–every other year flowers. Bet yours dropped seed and will come up again, much stronger, next year.
