https://thelonelycreative.com/contact-us/ Sometimes the sun shines, lighting up the world in wondrous ways. And sometimes the clouds take over and send stormy weather our way. You would think that if thunderstorms showed up simultaneously with the art festival I was in this weekend, it would not be a festive occasion. You would be partly right. But you would be partly wrong, too.

source link The thunderstorm that was forecast for noon on Sunday did arrive in the midst of the Barrington Art Festival.

https://thesentinelgroup.com/camp-lejeune/ The pounding rains and gusting winds sent all the artists scurrying to secure their tents and get out of harm’s way. The customers, many who had come ready for a bit of rainy weather, found cover in nearby stores or vehicles. Within minutes, the streets were deserted.

https://geneticsandfertility.com/services/sperm-testing/ Sherpa and I took cover in a nearby coffee shop along with a dozen or so other artists. And then the storm really hit — thunder clapping and a heavy downpour. For awhile, everyone’s attention turned to the weather sites on cell phones and iPads. But once we saw that the storm covered not only the Chicago area, but extended 150 miles west to the Illinois/Iowa border, hopes for a brief rain delay were dashed.

https://hymnsandhome.com/fall/ We did the most prudent thing — we sat down, ordered coffee and chai tea, and relaxed for a while. The promoter had hopes of resuming the show, and since it was still early in the day, we were all more than willing to wait. The conversation went round and round–next week’s art shows, the current weather report, a potter’s report on a new raku item he was designing, more weather reports.

https://geneticsandfertility.com/services/iui/ Again, you might expect to hear cranky complaints after a three-hour delay. There is a large amount of work and expense to prepare for and be in an art fair. No one wants an art festival to be rained out. But everyone was simply grateful there had been no serious damage, and so we all started packing our things, chatting back and forth.

The band, Cirrus Falcon, who had provided entertainment on Saturday and for the first couple of hours on Sunday, turned on their amps and began to play again. As the clouds broke up, and rays of sunlight began peeking through the gray atmosphere, the duo started singing the Beatles classic, Here Comes the Sun. More standards followed from Elton John, America, Simon and Garfunkel, Billy Joel, and many others.

https://www.52editions.com/confirmations/ Artists smiled, a few began singing. Several families wandered by, and stopped to listen to the music. We all enjoyed this intimate concert.

https://bettierose.co.uk/patricks-barn/ I didn’t sell anything today, didn’t make any money. But I did enjoy myself. I met new artists. I spent the afternoon in a great coffee shop, playing Scrabble with Sherpa while visiting with new friends. It wasn’t the day I had planned for, it wasn’t what I had anticipated or hoped for. But it was a great day anyway. The day’s events reinforced that my choice to be an artist on the art show circuit is a good choice for me.

Green Strawberry Hedgehog

Cactus Flower Macro, Tohono Chul Park in Tucson Arizona

Cactus Flower Macro © 2011 Bo Mackison

I have a back log of photographs that I took earlier this year in Arizona. Of course, I intended to have them all sorted and processed by now, but life got in the way. Funny how that happens!

We’ve had another spell of windy weather, which makes taking outdoor photos a bit difficult, so I resurrected sunny Arizona for you.

This macro is of the inner part of the green strawberry hedgehog cactus. This hedgehog can be differentiated from the more common strawberry hedgehog by examining its concentration of spines. So many golden spines cover the strawberry hedgehog, it looks almost like a heaping pile of straw.

The green strawberry hedgehog is “green” because there are only a few clusters of spines, though they are long and sharp. Nothing that looks like a pile of straw on this hedgehog!

I can personally attest to the sharpness of its long spines. In the months I was in Arizona, I never learned the lesson that if you lean in just a bit more for “one more” slightly different angle, inevitably one of those photographs will cost you a spiny stick in the hand.

It was always worth it though!

Just a reminder that I will be at the Barrington Art Festival in Barrington, Illinois this weekend, Saturday May 28 and Sunday May 29 from 10 a. m. to 5 p.m. with the portable version of Seeded Earth Studio. There will be a good selection of botanical photographs from both the Midwest and the Southwest — quite a contrast in plants, but it’s fun to see them side by side.

If you are in the area, I hope you will stop by Booth #36 and say hello!

Pasque Flower Seed Heads

Pasque Flower Seed Heads

These silvery, frothy, wild-looking seed heads belong to the velvety, deep purple Pasque Flower. The flowers are lovely to see and touch, deep hued and thick like luxurious velvet.

But I’m a fan of what appears after the flowers have had their moment, these twirly, wavy seed heads, like metallic threads erupting from a milky yellow center.

Surely an alien type creature from outer space?

Nope.

Just the seed head of the lovely Pasque Flower making its guarantee, that with some fancy seeding work, the flower will return next year.

Two Red Tulips

I take a deep breath and find myself gently exhaling every time I look at this photograph of these simple red tulips. It literally takes my breath away!

Sometimes, a photograph ought to do that. Affect a person so deeply that it makes one stop short, and take a second look, a really long look.

I so love it when I take a photograph like that. Doesn’t happen often. I’ll take two hundred photos a day, five days a week, and if I get one of these every few weeks I’m happy.

This kind of photograph isn’t for everyone. Some people like to see the entire flower, or even the entire garden at one glance. But for a few, these flowers–well, they are enough to make one stop and breathe deeply.
