Cabbage as an Exercise in Zen Mindfulness?

Zen Mindfulness in a Cabbage

Taking pictures is savoring life intensely, every hundredth of a second. ~ Mark Riboud

A cabbage as a study in Zen mindfulness.

Really?

When I was readying the tripod to photograph this flowering cabbage, I never expected this result.  A mesmerizing photograph of line and color.

Look at the colors, the tight spirals, the intricate patterns. Follow the circuitous lines of the green outer foliage, continue as it changes into a slate green, then an icy magenta, and finally a deep fuchsia.

I’ve never considered studying a photograph of a cabbage before. But now I find that it seems to be an unusual exercise in Zen mindfulness. It has the ability to capture the interest of the eye, to encourage a state of attentiveness.

A Zen cabbage!

Another lily, but this lily is different from the more common Easter Lily which looks like a trumpet, or the orange Wood Lily which has petals that spread outward. This lily’s petals curl underneath, and form a tidy looking flower. This photo was taken with my back upon the earth, as I looked into the lilies on the plant.

A Vision of the Mind

Another macro view, this time highly abstract, so it’s hard to identify the flower.  It’s a different view of the hybrid lily photographed at the Test Gardens west of Madison, Wisconsin. Aren’t these colors amazing, almost like a blazing fire.  A perfect match for the fiery days of August!

The faster one goes, the more strain there is on the senses, the more they fail to take in, the more confusion they must tolerate or gloss over — and the longer it takes to bring the mind to a stop in the presence of anything. ~ Wendell Berry
