Prairie Walk – Searching the Earth

Middleton Prairie

source url Walking the remnant prairie. Again. It calls me at this time of year, a nearly barren place at first glance. But what photographer only takes a first glance? I go to find miracles.

https://thelowegroupltd.com/fsesi3te I’m greeted by a raven, screeching at me, he watches my movement through the grasses. Screeches loudly from his safe perch on a high branch in the oak tree. “Squawk-away-away-away!” he calls to me. I listen for awhile, then think perhaps he’ll fly away soon, so I can listen to the prairie’s quiet.

https://riverhillcurrent.com/qrlmt7fbacz I begin a conversation with Raven, he squawks, I talk. “Fine. Sit there then. And hold still. I’ll change my lens and take a proper portrait of you.” I suppose he’s not the portrait type. He takes wing before I can unzip my pack.

https://hereisnewyorkv911.org/4s3no577g I return to my search on the earth, finding little pieces of miracles as I walk. I capture the wonder of it all in notes and line drawings in my field journal and in my photographs. I don’t want this special prairie walk to be relegated to the realm of my memories, mostly forgotten.

follow Black oaks, their looming figures stark against the swirling fog. Prairie grasses, nipped by frost, browned, brittle, curl at the feet of the giant trees.

An oak savanna.

“A savanna is generally defined as a plant community where trees are a component but where their density is ‘…so low that it allows grasses and other herbaceous vegetation to become the actual dominants of the community.'” (Curtis, The Vegetation of Wisconsin).

Frost in the mornings now. Every morning the outside world has a frosty coating. Tiny crystals shimmer when the sunlight catches them just so. There are whisperings (or mutterings, take your pick) of snow in the forecast. I find this so hard to believe.Wintry weather here so soon?

Wasn’t it just last weekend that I was standing in my art booth, sweltering in the humidity, wondering how many 90˚ days in a row we’d had in Wisconsin?
