Stretching our Spirits

Stay here – “sitting in the blues.” Allow emotion to turn everything into a statue, give fear and anxiety permission to darken the view.

Or…study the obstacles in the way. Consider strengths and skills. Make the decision to move forward, knowing that a stumble or a fall precedes standing again and moving forward.

There are helpers on this journey. Find a flowing river with colorful guides to show the way.  Or a bridge to provide safe passage from here to there.

There will be rough places to navigate, but the brightest wonders are sometimes found nearest the rustiest spots. Keep walking the path. The hardest of challenges grow our souls, stretch our spirits. Determined, we will find our way.

Cabbage as an Exercise in Zen Mindfulness?

Zen Mindfulness in a Cabbage

Taking pictures is savoring life intensely, every hundredth of a second. ~ Mark Riboud

A cabbage as a study in Zen mindfulness.

Really?

When I was readying the tripod to photograph this flowering cabbage, I never expected this result.  A mesmerizing photograph of line and color.

Look at the colors, the tight spirals, the intricate patterns. Follow the circuitous lines of the green outer foliage, continue as it changes into a slate green, then an icy magenta, and finally a deep fuchsia.

I’ve never considered studying a photograph of a cabbage before. But now I find that it seems to be an unusual exercise in Zen mindfulness. It has the ability to capture the interest of the eye, to encourage a state of attentiveness.

A Zen cabbage!

When you remove the risk, you remove the challenge. When you remove the challenge, you wither on the vine.

The Trees Speak of Connection

Olbrich Autumn Wonders - A World of Yellows

World in Yellow ©2012 Bo Mackison

Know that the tree is not just the form, it is not just a certain species the botanists’ talk about, it is an unknown god – so green in your courtyard, so close to you, beckoning you, calling you again and again. ~ Osho

My Connection to Nature

I often think that trees are the finest species on this earth. I love photographing flowers, grasses, natural landscapes. But there is something about the trees. In my part of the world, I am never far from some type of tree. There are usually a few trees in every yard, and large stands of trees in whatever direction I head from my home.

Grounded in the earth, they often stretch a hundred feet high, their tops surrounded only by sky when I peer at their crowns. I like being able to reach out my hand, rest my palm on the trunk of a tree, and feel a deep sense of connection to nature.

And I am happy that there are trees not only in my yard, and in my community, but I am also happy that there are trees even in downtown Chicago. I’ll be in Chicago next week. And I’ll be noticing the trees that grow there, even in the midst of a crowded metropolis.
