Wabi Sabi in the Garden

When suffering overwhelms me I will breathe in and leave an opening in this moment for the joy that lies just behind it.  ~ Philip Martin

This is a dying leaf amidst all the other green leaves. And yet, I think it is one of the most beautiful in the garden, with its translucent creamy whites streaked with purple veining.

Drooping towards the earth, the weight of the leaf is too heavy for its stem. But in letting go, in its slow motion drift towards the earth — which it will soon be a part of — it offers a certain grace, a dignity, and beauty — wabi-sabi beauty.

It’s a wabi-sabi kind of day.

A Bit of Enchantment

Behind the Green Curtain?

I do not understand how anyone can live without one small piece of enchantment to turn to.
~ Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings

Another visit to the botanical gardens, another morning with time enough to notice textures, patterns, colors. The sunlight’s reflection on the large leaf of the elephant ear plant, the sun still strong, still a summer’s sun although its strength wanes each day as we add a few night minutes onto out 24 hour allotment, subtract a few light minutes.

I sat on one of the many benches in the gardens, closed my eyes, and noticed the many ways I am aware of the sun without opening my eyes. Warm on my arms, warm enough to cause me to break into a sweat under my hat band, a glowing feeling, a feeling of well-being. All is right my my tiny garden world when the sun shines.

I found a small piece of enchantment today in the garden.

November and Nothingness

November © 2010 Bo Mackison

November is all about this world wasting away, vanishing, and about us getting used to the nothingness, used to saying good bye.  ~ Vivian Swift

On Decluttering:  I may choose never to declutter the interior of my home. Not when nature does such an obsessive job of decluttering the out of doors in November. All that was lush and green, all the gardens that were thick with a multitude of colorful flowers, all gone. Just gone. My outdoors world is now wearing the fashionable look of uncluttered. My maple and oak trees are bare.

No. No inside decluttering for me right now. I need a little clutter in my life, and my outsides are feeling all too barren.

In Balance

In art and dream may you proceed with abandon. In life may you proceed with balance and stealth. ~ Patti Smith
