Trillium, The Giant Woodland Beauty

Large-flowered Trillium

The Grandiflora or Large-leaved Trillium is my favorite Spring woodland wildflower. Not common, but it is easy to spy when you come across a plant. Each specimen can grow up to 18 inches high and each flower is about 3 inches wide.

Grandiflora White Trillium

This is definitely one wildflower that should never be picked or transplanted in the wild. If the leaves are disturbed, the plant often dies, as this is the plant’s food source. In many states, it is illegal to disturb flowers in the Trillium family. The plant can be grown by seed, but it takes approximately 5 to 7 years to bloom.

Bo, that top photo rocks! You caught the light without losing the detail in the whites and that is T-R-I-C-K-Y!

  2. You’ve captured my fav. I’m partial to the painted trillium, but I love all of them. Beautiful close up. Just wonderful.

Wow, I’d like to see those! Ours look very much like it but are a lot smaller.

  4. Great shots Bo. We successfully transplanted some quite a number of years ago and once established they were a hardy plant that lasted for years. It was nice to have them at home as well as cottage.
Sidebar: they are the official flower of the province of Ontario; and as such are incorporated into govt logos and travel sites.

  5. Another great spring wildflower that I adore, beautiful work Bo !!

  6. That top one is a fine trillium picture, and it’s one tough flower to get a good image from – congrats!
