Hanging Around

Sometimes it is the simplest things that can bring joy. I was watching several acacia seedpods dangling from a young tree at the Arizona Sonora Desert Museum a few days ago.  My camera, set on a tripod, was set up next to me. Two boys, maybe 8 and 5, came bounding towards me. They stopped at my side and looked at the tree.

“What are you looking at?” the older boy asked me. He had a small camera dangling from his wrist and began twirling it in circles. Perhaps it was his pre-photograph warm-up exercise.

“Oh, I’m watching these acacia seeds. They are moving in the breeze. I was thinking about the photograph I want to take.”

The older boy stared at the seeds a moment, obviously confused. But the younger boy appeared to understand. He pulled at his brother’s shirt, dragging him towards the women waiting for them. “C’mon, Jay,” he said, giving me a backwards glance.  “She’s just hanging around.”

Yep. Me and the acacia seedpods. We’re just hanging around.

Sunny Days at Tempe Festival of the Arts

Sherpa came out to Arizona for the weekend and proved invaluable in helping me set up and assist in manning the Seeded Earth Photography booth at the Tempe Festival of the Arts in Tempe, Arizona. Plus it was great to see him after his exile in snowy Madison!

The streets were filled with enthusiastic crowds and I had a great time explaining my artistic philosophy to hundreds of people. Most people don’t care why I do the kind of photography I do, but these people not only cared, they wanted to hear about my photography, why I shoot macros, and how I decided to show on the art fair circuit. The conversations were a highlight of the first two days of the show.

The weather was perfect. The crowds friendly and seemed to enjoy the festival. One of my favorite parts of the show were when people would look into my booth, stop in their tracks, point at a specific photograph of mine, and break out into a huge grin. When they came into the booth, they were a pleasure to work with.

Today, Sunday March 27th, is the last day of the Tempe Festival of the Arts. Hours are 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. If you live in the Phoenix area, there are 300 artists who would love to talk to you and have you enjoy their art.

Clydesdales at Tubac

Clydesdales at Tubac

Today was the opening day of the Tubac Festival of Arts in Tubac, Arizona. After yesterday’s windy day during set-up for the show, the weather for the first day of the five day art festival was mild and warm, and of course, sunny.

One hundred and seventy artists from throughout the country set up their art booths along the streets of Tubac, amidst the artist colony’s galleries, shops, restaurants, and studios.  Clydesdales pull trolleys throughout the town since no cars are allowed on the streets during the fair.

I was lucky enough to get a booth placement near one of the trolley stops (at the corner of Hesselbarth Lane and Tubac Road).  What  magnificent animals they are! (You can see my booth to the left of the horses, look for the the white and green sign.)

Seeded Earth Studio will be at the Tubac Festival of Art for the remainder of the show, February 10 through 13, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day. Stop and say hello!
