Nothing is more beautiful than the love that has weathered the storms of life. The love of the young for the young, that is the beginning of life. But the love of the old for the old, that is the beginning of things longer. ~ Jerome K Jerome

It is not the ship so much as the skillful sailing that assures the prosperous voyage.” ~ George William Curtis
The sun set behind the clouds, so we missed a stunning sunset. But after the sun disappeared, we walked around Anderson Dock for another hour, as there was no dearth of photo opportunities.
The sky remained a pale gray, but Green Bay had a silvery reflection, and shimmered as a sailboat pulled close to the dock to pick up a passenger. The building, now the Frances Hardy Gallery, was built in the late 1800s and was one of the main docks on Green Bay. It is on the National Register of Historic Places.
Today it is a big attraction for many vacationers visiting Door County. The town of Ephraim allows graffiti – within posted parameters – following an old custom of the dock. Over a hundred years ago, when sailors docked at Ephraim, they often carved their names and the name of their ship on the walls of the building.

We hit the sunny beaches where we occupy ourselves keeping the sun off our skin . . . and the sand out of our belongings. ~Erma Bombeck
Door County, Wisconsin. The chairs all in a row, the boats all anchored, Green Bay placid. In another three hours, this beach will be filled with vacationers. Lots of splashing, calling, sun-worshiping. But at 7:30 in the morning, there aren’t too many people wandering around. It’s one of the best times of the day, my way of thinking.

No, I’m not taking a holiday in Antarctica, though truly, sometimes I start imagining the Canada geese I see are really penguins! Not near the Pole, but winter in Wisconsin can still be a little long. Strong winds broke open the sheet of ice covering Green Bay near Fish Creek, but there is still an icy slush along the shores. Even in the glow of the setting sun, it all looks cold. And with temps hovering in the single digits and the wind chill dropping to 10 below or colder, taking photographs becomes a challenge.
How fast can I set up the shot, take it, and make it back to the interior of the warm car? Hmm. Not quite fast enough.
“There is a rule in sailing where the more maneuverable ship should give way to the less maneuverable craft. I think this is sometimes a good rule to follow in human relationships as well.” ~ Joyce Brothers
One of my viewers, Rosa Say, who has a remarkable site at Aloha Coaching left me an interesting comment. “There is a Hawaiian belief that the sky above us is filled with multiple layers of life: The word we use is papahulilani, and (it means) we don’t always see what is there, but we shouldn’t question that it is.” Thank you, Rosa, for this added insight.
